Jacopo Amigoni, Jael and Sisera

First half of the 18th century
Ca' Rezzonico, Venice, Italy

In Judges 4:17-22 the Canaanite general Sisera injudiciously seeks shelter from the Israelite army in the tent of Heber the Kenite. Heber is an ally of the Israelites, so his wife waits till Sisera is asleep and then drives a tent peg into his head.

In portraits Jael's peg and hammer are used as her attributes.
